[RC] Making a difference (was: AERC joining, etc.) - k s swigart

Ranelle Rubin said:

Bottom line, if you don't like it, live with it,
don't do it, or get involved! But don't berate
those who are volunteering their time to make
a difference!

Actually, "berating those who are volunteering their time to make a
difference" is one of the ways to "get involved" as an attempt to change
something you don't like. And, beleive it or not, doing so also takes
time and effort and could come under the heading of "volunteering time
to make a difference."

It may not be the most effective way of changing something; however, the
saying "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" comes from somewhere so there
must at least be somebody who thinks complaining is a good way to effect
change (in fact, since it is an oft repeated saying, there are probably
LOTS of people who think it is a good way to effect change).

But the corollary to that saying is "but it is also the first one to get
replaced." So it is also well understood that it you may be shooting
yourself in the foot by using that tactic.

Doesn't change the fact that by her above referenced post, Ranelle has,
in some ways, "berated" somebody for making an effort to change
something that they don't like. And, presumably, she did so because she
was trying to change people's behaviour.

p.s. I am personally of the opinion that people should attempt to
effect change by voting with their feet (i.e. refuse to join) MORE
quickly rather than as a last resort. Volunteers or anybody else who run
an organization can ignore people who are willing to live with it or who
are willing to act futilely to effect change from within, but if they do
that to people who vote with their feet, they will rapidly find
themselves powerless because they have no constituents.
