throw in multiple vet check locations (we had 4 separation locations)  
and it becomes even more challenging. (you'd need 4 Nancy's and many  
more volunteer pulse takers).   I honestly think it's best to be  
flexible on this - in our case we had LOTS of vets, and there was  
never any waiting. In the case where there's a rush, and not enough  
vets, one should use additional pulse takers. The use of hand-held  
monitors certainly improves the accuracy and makes up for lack of  
qualified/experienced pulse takers.

regarding the number of times allowed to present - the FEI rules  
state that the rider has 2 chances. AERC has no such rule and we made  
sure that every body understood that. It was never an issue, but if  
it had come down to it and the horse needed 3 times to present, they  
would have been dq'd from the FEI competition per FEI rules, but  
allowed to continue the AERC event.
