I did that once and my mare "danced" on me.  I think I would have been better off to let go.

I had one good little mare that would throw in a buck or two every time I rode
her, but she would always keep it kind of restrained. I guess she did not like
the discomfort of having her head yanked on those occasions when I did hit the
dirt.
