[RC] falling safely - B. L. Kossowan

My first reaction when I'm about to part with my horse is to get a death grip
on
the reins. This actually serves some practical purposes.
- It keeps you connected with the horse.
- It breaks your fall and at times had helped me land on my feet instead of my
head.
- Most of all, the horse punishes itself when you hit those reins. I'm not an
advocate of corporal punishment. Neither am I an advocate for horses that like
to
lose their riders.
I had one good little mare that would throw in a buck or two every time I rode
her, but she would always keep it kind of restrained. I guess she did not like
the discomfort of having her head yanked on those occasions when I did hit the
dirt.
