Or how about,
Don't let a gaited horse trot or canter, or you'll ruin his gait (tell that to my husband's Paso Fino, who trots, canters, and gaits just fine)
or
A horse can't buck going uphill (yeah, right...)

A list of widespread bad advice would be amusing. The only thing I can
remember off the top of my head is all the people that were recommending
rich feed. I even heard secondhand about one stable owner that only fed
alfalfa pellets because it kept the poop to a minimum.
