How about: "You can't let a hot horse drink"?  I heard that one over and over....or
"Never let a horse eat with a bit in his mouth"
"If the saddle doesn't fit well, put another pad under there"
"If you don't start a horse under saddle before they're 3 you'll never be able to make them obey <yep, I really have heard that one>"
And the worst one, though possibly only understandable by folks who know the gaited horse world
"You have to ride them some to scar the knee joints so they'll step high enough to show" <yep, heard that one, too>

A list of widespread bad advice would be amusing. The only thing I can
remember off the top of my head is all the people that were recommending
rich feed. I even heard secondhand about one stable owner that only fed
alfalfa pellets because it kept the poop to a minimum.
