Both Polaski's and McCloud's are hand tools quite useful for trail maintenance.  They were invented by Forest Service guys.
 
A Polaski is a combination of axe and mattock.  Chop trees, and break up the ground.
 
A McCloud is a ~foot wide hoe with rake teeth on the other side. 
 
Neither of them are as good at the jobs as having both standard tools, but it sure is easier to only slep one tool instead of two a couple of miles up the mountain.
