[RC] Mari Smultea finish Tevis? - Tx Trigger

Dawn Simas posted: >>>Rider # 167, Mari Smultea from Issaquah, WA, I met
her on the trail and rode together for a while. Very nice lady and I am
wondering if she finished?<<<

Dawn Carrie from Texas may be able to fill into some of the details. I'm
only repeating what I remember her telling me. They left Foresthill
together, some of the last riders out. They were walking down a hill, Dawn
in front, and as it went to level out, before they picked up a trot,
something happened and Dawn told me she heard a bit of a scream from Mari,
turned and looked back as she saw Mari's horses light sticks (and horse)
tumbling down off the trail. Mari was OK, and as was the horse it seems, but
they could not get the horse back on trail. They worked on it for about 45
min., and then the Sweep riders came along and also helped. I believe it
took until morning to get the horse out of his position off the trail.

Dawn gave up her Tevis finish, to stay with Mari, and try to help her and
her horse. She traveled out from Texas to do Tevis (almost 2000 miles), and
I know was as prepared as one could be. She said her horse Bear was feeling
great, and doing well. But, as she told me, what was she going to do, say to
Mari "Dang, that sucks, see you later" ?? I know I could not leave a rider
who had gone off the trail alone for the next person to help. Not sure how
those riders heard Roger yelling for help right after he went over the edge
chose to not go back to at least check on him, and see how bad it was, and
decide if they could help, and then continue on to the next spot with ride
officials. But, that is just me I guess.
