Lauren, you were riding in my backyard!  I've never known any "tick fever" here.

It was the Swanton NATRC ride. California.  Beautiful, redwood forest and coastal valleys and mountains but TONS of poison oak!
What are the symptoms of tick fever? We didn't check for that.  My horse doesn't have a fever and seems completely normal except the swollen legs - all 4, but mostly back.
