[RC] ZTEC - Jan and Bill Stevens

US and Canadian "zones" at the Pan Am support the Z-TEC ride being put on by Jan Stevens.

If this ride IS supported, then "such an event" will be able to occur in spite of the FEI's decision.<<<

Yes, Kat is right. ZTEC (Zone Team Endurance Challenge) is an event that was created to provide the endurance community a team event.

After the FEI came to their decision concerning the Pan Ams the US/ Canada did have a North American Championship in Maryland which was well attended and went very well. However, because it was an FEI 4- star team event it required that teams come from the various zones from the US and Canada. Riders were required to have FEI Passports (the expensive ones) and pay various fees to the federations etc. USEF through its various endurance committees, along with the AERC- International committee wanted to create a ride for teams that offered the opportunity for riders to come together in teams and compete. They wanted it to have FEI sanctioning, but didn't want to have the 4-star limitations that a championship has. This is were ZTEC came to be created.

Through many months of conference calls, emails, etc etc etc ZTEC has grown. Qualifications have changed a lot so that it can be opened up for more riders and horses to compete. Qualifications include 250 endurance miles for the riders by the date of the ride (now that means 250 miles of rides 50 miles or more), 250 endurance miles for the horse by the date of the ride (again 50 mile rides), and the horse needs to be at least 84 months old (7 years) by the date of the ride. The mileage requirement are for horse and ride, but not necessarily as a team. Teams can ride FEI, Open AERC, or a combination of both. Teams can self-organize or can contact their AERC-International Zone representatives for help. We're planning a party atmosphere with a dinner and dance on Thursday night...vetting in and opening ceremonies on Friday...ride on Saturday...BC and closing ceremonies on Sunday.

Sponsorship for this event includes USEF as a major sponsor due to their desire to help promote endurance and their desire to see a team building event here in the US. Gulf Coast 4 Star Trailers and Running Bear are also sponsoring the event.

Teams can be 3-4 riders. Teams will be recognized (awarded) for their placement according to their top 3 riders finish time. We're looking at several different divisions from Top Zone Team, Top Young Rider Team (riders 16-21), Top Junior Team, Top Family Team, etc. All who complete will receive a completion award. Of course since AERC and FEI (for a 3 star event) don't recognize team events all the results will be based on individual placings.

So far we have at least 2 Young Rider Teams (they are really enthusiastic), a Junior Team, 4-5 Canadian teams, a team from the Central/Mid-West Region, a team from the Northwest, a team from the East, a APEX team, and a Montana team or two.

We're also adding a page to the site for those people and/or teams who are looking for teams and/or additional team members.

Our website is www.zonechallenge.net

Nomination forms are there for downloading...Deadline is July 31, however, drop us an email and we'll get you added if you aren't able to get it in by then.

Thanks,
Bill and Jan Stevens
