[RC] Horses getting into trouble pre-ride - Lynne Tomovick

Food for thought ... It could happen to any of us:

A few months ago I traveled from South Dakota to Virginia to do the Old Dominion. The night before the ride my horse coliced and I did not start. Looking back and (thinking) I know my horse, the symptoms began in the vet in (5:00 pm) and walking back to the trailer to camp.

Thank goodness this didn't occur during the ride! After reading the endurance news Animal Welfare post and # of colics being cause of death in horses at rides really hit home. I hadn't even had a chance to "override" my horse! We thought we did everything right with travel. You can never know everything.

There are so many factors out of our control. The sutle details are important. Pooping, peeing for one. I'm going to look into ulcer prevention. Hydration, stress, mares in heat.

Lynne

p.s. Always ask about ride refund policy and don't make assumptions.
