The first time is the free-be.  You will not react in an allergic manner to an antibiotic the first time, after that anything goes.  This is general for all allergic reactions.
 
As far as the ingredients in horse ointments, with the exception of horse only antibiotics, they were used by both people and horses 100+ years ago.  People just stopped using them on themselves with the advent of "wonder" drugs.  I have a reproduction of an old advert for "Pratts Healing Ointment"  it is touted as being "good for man and beast" with a drawing of a strange looking man, and an ever stranger horse in bed together.
