RE: [RC] [RC] Tevis, Eastern Horses - Ranelle Rubin

Paul and others,

My boyfriend, Marc Van Zuuk is on the Board of Govenors of the WSTF as well as works for the CDF. As I am consumed currently with my first Tevis, he will be sure to let me know if a cancellation happens...It may well have to do with whatever is happening elsewhere in the state in terms of fires, causing crews that would be available to us locally to be deployed elsewhere in the state. Our fire crews here in the Auburn area have been sent all over the state lately....

I will be sure to post anything I hear. If anyone wants to email me privately before they "pull out of home-headed for CA" feel free to do so and I will be happy to give you current information. I am even willing to take your cell # and call you while you are on your way if anything changes.

Onward faithfull riders....ride, really ride!

I was looking at this years Tevis entry list and noticed that at least 7 horses that were at the Old Dominion ride this year are planning to trek west a few thousand miles. They include four of the Top Ten 100 mile horses, one other 100 mile finisher, one that pulled RO, and one that completed the 50 mile ride (which may have been harder) . Isn't this well above the normal numbers that try this? John Crandell III and Heraldic must have inspired a few folks.

The Tevis website posted a warning yesterday that fire danger may cause ride cancellation this year. Is that normal? For those who live in Cool California, it would be a bummer and a disapointment. For those of us who have to leave a week or two early and travel several thousand miles to get there it would be heartbreaking. (plus expensive)... Any ideas on what the chances of cancellation are? What are you hearing from the Forest Service?
