Re: [RC] How tree hugging hurts the environment/trying to keep endurance focus - Barbara McCraryOur head forester of many years ago told me about the thesis he wrote for his degree. He did a survey on what people wanted in a recreation area. His conclusion was: People wanted an remote wilderness area easily reached by automobile. If that just doesn't blow your mind....On another subject, I have been told that now much of the Applegate-Lassen trail in Nevada has been placed in a Wilderness designation, competitive horseback events are no longer allowed. We loved that ride when Lavone Booth managed it; we put it on for several years after she dropped it. It looks like it may never happen again. The same thing happened to Crockett's Outlaw Trail ride, after the Grand Staircase-Escalante was put into Wilderness designation. I used to call myself an environmentalist, and in the true sense of the word...wanting to take care of the environment in the way I think is best...I still am. But I do not use that word any more because it's been taken over by many who have what I think is a dillusional concept of what that stewardship entails. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
