Re: [RC] beet pulp - Beth WalkerThe manager of the feed store where I buy my beet pulp told me that: Shredded BP requires a 2 hour soak Pelleted BP requires a 24 hour soak Now, I've fed shredded without soaking, but made sure it was sloppy with water. Mostly, though, I do the 2-hour soak. It does expand quite a bit, so I can see how it would cause choke. T he pelleted beet pulp expands A LOT. I would say about 5x more than the shredded. I've heard stories of either kind causing choke in horses, so I never feed it dry, **especially** the pelleted BP. When my store ran out of shredded, I came up with a moderately easy way to deal with the pellets. I would cook them up the night before on the stove, strain out the excess water, then store it in a gallon baggie in the fridge. One cup of pellets would expand to completely fill my biggest pan -- the size that comes with a colander for cooking spagetti. Cooking directions: put the pellets and water on the stove, heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer (very low) for about 30 - 40 minutes. Check frequently to prevent boil-over. Add water as needed when the BP expands enough so it isn't fully covered. The pellets should be completely decomposed. Strain and rinse in the colander, press out the excess water and bag. I did it this way because I go straight from work to the boarding stable. I'd put the bagged beet pulp in my lunch. :) On Jun 27, 2007, at 10:53 AM, Rebecca Wyatt wrote: There are horses that choke on dry, shredded beet pulp (I personally have =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Ridecamp is a service of Endurance Net, http://www.endurance.net.
