Re: [RC] beet pulp - Beth Walker

The manager of the feed store where I buy my beet pulp told me that:
Shredded BP requires a 2 hour soak
Pelleted BP requires a 24 hour soak

Now, I've fed shredded without soaking, but made sure it was sloppy with water. Mostly, though, I do the 2-hour soak. It does expand quite a bit, so I can see how it would cause choke. T he pelleted beet pulp expands A LOT. I would say about 5x more than the shredded. I've heard stories of either kind causing choke in horses, so I never feed it dry, **especially** the pelleted BP.

When my store ran out of shredded, I came up with a moderately easy way to deal with the pellets. I would cook them up the night before on the stove, strain out the excess water, then store it in a gallon baggie in the fridge. One cup of pellets would expand to completely fill my biggest pan -- the size that comes with a colander for cooking spagetti.

Cooking directions: put the pellets and water on the stove, heat to boiling. Reduce heat and simmer (very low) for about 30 - 40 minutes. Check frequently to prevent boil-over. Add water as needed when the BP expands enough so it isn't fully covered. The pellets should be completely decomposed. Strain and rinse in the colander, press out the excess water and bag.

I did it this way because I go straight from work to the boarding stable. I'd put the bagged beet pulp in my lunch. :)

There are horses that choke on dry, shredded beet pulp (I personally have
experience with this, and have heard about many others). The amount was
small - only about 2/3 cup. I strongly advise taking just 10 minutes to get
it wet. Better safe than sorry, and the added benefit is extra hydration.

The only thing I've ever heard about pelleted beet pulp is that it NEEDS to
be soaked until the pellets are soft or it can cause the horse to choke.
I've always used shredded beet pulp, which does not need to be soaked, so I
just add a bit of water, everything else, stir & serve.
This winter, when there was no shredded bp abailable, I had to use the
pelleted and was quite surprised that it took so long to break up those
pellets. I was able to accelerate the process by using hot water, but it was
sure annoying if I'd forgotten to set out a bucket of it to soak the night
before. My horses don't like waiting too long for their bp in the morning.
