Re: [RC] Gaiting - Peter HarperBruce, Its always interesting to hear what the
preferred gaits are for different gaited breeds doing
endurance. Sugar's mix is very broad. You don't
often see a horse that will do the full spectrum from
foxtrot to run walk to pace. Most will either stay on
the trot side or the pace side of the spectrum.
Do you find more pace as she gets tired?
My TWH mare will move from a run walk to a stepping
pace as she tires. I also notice she will break to a
canter earlier late in a ride. I always try to mix up
the gaits to use different muscle groups. We haven't
tried a 100 but have been doing 50's for the past
three seasons.
Good luck at Tevis this year!

Hi Jody--
My foxtrotter mare will gait through a 100. She mixes
it up a bit with
foxtrot, running walk, rack and pacing, but she rarely
trots. It is
rare, though. I think we will see ever more gaited
horses on the
endurance trail and better candidates will surface
with time and
experience. We will see if this mare can finish Tevis
this year. I'm
told two foxtrotters have already accomplished that
feat. Just think of
the money I'm saving on ibuprofen. Dr Q
