[RC] Final Scores.............. - Bruce Weary DC

We are at 24 hours now, and the final numbers are as follows:
   1's: 92 2's: 2 3's: 2 4's: 1

Provided we as a group aren't deluded by our passion for our horses, and we all gave an accurate assessment of our horses' recoveries, it seems there is nearly a 100:1 ratio of horses that recover habitually in the first 15 minutes after a ride as opposed to those that take any amount of time longer.
Now, horses can be in trouble without an elevated pulse, they can recover quickly and get in trouble later, they can take a long time to recover and be just fine, they can get BC and colic that night, and everything in between.
What can we learn from these numbers, and where should we take this discussion from here?
Regarding the new rule proposal, I will reiterate a few of my own thoughts and observations:
1) There is no guarantee that more lives will be saved, although there may be. Abuse may be detected earlier and reduced. I don't know how much.
2) The new proposal isn't "aimed" at any particular type of rider. It's aimed at horses with prolonged elevated pulses at the end of the ride, for whatever reason.
3) I think an hour to complete the vet check after the 30 minute pulse down is more workable.
4) Horses that die aren't typically racing at the front.
5) I don't know if we have any data that indicates anything about the speeds horses are traveling that require treatment for metabolic disorders during or after a ride, but don't die. That would be an interesting bit of information, I think. I would imagine even these horses can be traveling at any given speed.
Gotta take my wife to a movie. Dr Q
