Re: [RC] Non Arab Pulse downs - Sky Ranch

One of the best P&R's I ever saw on a horse at a competitive trail ride was
a Quarter Horse mare. It was her first ctr, and the rider's first ctr. The
mare was in shape, though - she was a working cowhorse, used to loping
around and working cattle all day - in other words, she was really fit.

I saw her canter up a steep hill to a P&R, and she pulsed in at 32, after 10
minutes, with respiration of 8 - she beat my Arabian (who was 36 and 9), and
we had walked up that hill. As several previous non-Arab owners have said,
it doesn't necessarily take an Arabian to have a good pulse-down -- it just
takes a fit horse, and a horse fit for endurance.

BTW, this was a heavyweight rider with a heavy western saddle, too, on that
QH mare.
