RE: [RC] Maybe state Senators will realize how foolish the anti horse slaughter bill really is!! - Smith, Dave

Too bad the unwanted horses won't be delivered to Ms. Derek who, I'm
sure, has the financial ability to support them all on her own land.
This parallels my suggestion several years ago when city folk passed the
ban on scientifically managed hunting of mountain lions in California.
After that vote, I had suggested we gather up all those problem lions
here in the state's rural counties, you know, the ones who kill your
livestock, stalk your children and eat your pets, and ship them to the
big cities where they would be let loose in the city parks. That way,
the city folk can get close up and personal with the lions they want to
"save".

horse slaughter bill really is!!

Unless they want to fund money to take care of the unwanted etc.
horses!!???

For release: 5/4/7 For information: Frank Bowman (217) 585-1600
*Horsemen, livestock producers called to rally against *
*animal rights groups over equine slaughter bill*
Springfield, IL - More than 200 horses are expected at 11 a.m. Tuesday
in Springfield to oppose efforts by animal rights organizations to
prohibit horse slaughter as a humane way to cull unwanted and
unemployable animals from the nation's horse herd, a viable end of life
decision for horse owners and a taking of their property rights,
according to Frank Bowman, president, Horsemen's Council of Illinois
(HCI).
Bowman also called for horse owners and livestock producers from across
the state to join in the rally on the East side of the State Capitol as
Illinois state senators prepare to vote on HB 1711 (an anti-slaughter
bill) in committee later Tuesday.
In preparation for the rally, HCI cautions that horses are not allowed
on the Capitol grounds. In response, Bowman says that "horses to ride"
will be provided for everyone who shows up in support. "They are
kid-safe, bomb-proof horses, not the type that typically go to slaughter

or which are sold at auction but representing the problem this
prohibition would create," he asserted.
"A strong showing from the horse and livestock owners of the state is
needed to convince legislators to oppose this frivolous, opportunistic
and anti-agricultural legislation. Star-struck urban legislators with no

agricultural constituency are making policy that effects rural Illinois
and taking away your rights as a horse owner. This issue affects the
whole state of Illinois - not the concrete jungle of Chicago," Bowman
added.
The rally is in cooperation with agricultural advocate and radio
personality Trent Loos who previously had planned to gather unwanted
horses and deliver them to Hollywood personality Bo Derek's ranch in
California. Derek has come to Springfield multiple times in support of
the anti-slaughter legislation.
"A ban on horse harvesting will undoubtedly create unwanted horse
problems but beyond that it is a violation of the personal property
rights of farmers and ranchers", Trent said.
"To call attention to this situation, I recently announced the 'Bo Knows

Best' journey and was well underway with a plan of gathering as many
unwanted horses from as many states as possible and transporting them to

Bo Derek's ranch in California," Loos said, "The journey was the right
thing to do, but the trip to California is not going to happen as a more

pressing matter has now surfaced in Illinois where a key discussion is
set to take place Tuesday," he said.
The HCI and Loos position to retain processing is shared by Illinois
Farm Bureau, the American Veterinarian Medical Association and more than

200 legitimate equine organizations, "The folks who actually care for
horses on a daily basis," HCI's Bowman added. In opposition are the dog
and cat animal rights groups such as People for the Ethical Treatment of

Animals and Humane Society of the United States, which view horses as
pets.
Trent Loos is a sixth generation United States farmer who has taken his
passion for a rural lifestyle to the radio air waves with a program
called Loos Tales. Trent has a background in livestock production but
his desire to bridge the gap between farmers and consumers led him to a
career in radio broadcasting and public speaking.
Loos was raised on a diversified farm near Quincy, IL. He entered the
hog business at a young age and has been involved in livestock
production ever since. He and his wife Kelli operate a purebred
Limousine and Angus cowherd in central Nebraska.
The Horsemen's Council of Illinois is affiliated with the American Horse

Council and is the statewide association of equine organizations and
individuals working to provide centralized leadership for Illinois'
77,000 horse owners, 213,000 horses and its $3.8 billion industry, which

provides full-time employment for more than 15,000 people.
/*Note: our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this email
blast. We are trying to reach as many horseowners as possible, and your
name may be on multiple lists. Please share this information with all
other horseowners you know. Thank you.*/
