RE: [RC] [RC] Ride Photographers - Ranelle Rubin

Michelle,

Good points..Two things I would like to see, and one I have experienced and appreciated. That was that our completion award at Desert Gold was a picture of our choice from the ones hanging on the board that were taken that day. I was promised a matt that never arrived, but small issue..no biggee.

The second regarding digital images, I appreciate the right for these professional photographers to charge a reasonable fee for the image..they were out there, setting up, using typically expensive cameras and lenses, etc...so what I would like to see is a reasonable fee for the first shot, and maybe a half price fee for any additional. I know I absolutely love the few I have purchased!

Hopefully I don't step on any toes with this email :) but I was kind of
curious what everyone else's thoughts were. I love photographs, and though
I am still "new" to the sport, only having completed two 50's, knowing
myself, I will always love having photographs from the rides. I feel as
though the ride photographers tend to be more on the "professional" side,
and thus the prices are a bit steep for someone like me who really only
wants electronic copies so I can have them on my computer and screensaver.
I never anticipate making any prints of any photographs I buy. And the ones
that only come in prints, never see the light of day after being placed on
my scanner for scanning. I personally would buy every (decent and unique
(as in, if two pictures are taken at the same spot, I would only buy one))
picture of me taken at a ride if they were more moderately priced.

Besides the difficult task of telling my friends I'm out photographing
rather than helping crew for them, lol, I love photography, and would love
to photograph at rides just for fun. And then share them all on a photo
sharing website, for anyone to take and use as they please. I really don't
care about compensation as it doesn't cost anything to use a digital camera,
and there are plenty of free photo-sharing websites. Anyway, I was just
wondering what everyone's thoughts were on this. Would this "ruin" the ride
photographers business and screw those of us up who want "professional"
looking pictures? or are more of the majority people like me and would
really apprecaite someone volunteering as a photographer at a ride?

I don't know. In anticipation of the soon to be posted Foxcatcher pictures
I was looking around her site, and noticed the prices. $10 for a 3x5 print
(+$3 s&h), or $15 for an electronic copy. These prices aren't so bad I
guess for one picture, but I know she was taking pictures before the ride
around camp, and was at several spots on the trail. These prices will get a
little crazy after you go beyond one print, I think anyway, especially for
my purpose, merely memories. I really appreciate the ride photographers
coming out, as I LOVE pictures :) but I just think more people would buy
more pictures if the prices were more reasonable.

Anyway, just my own thoughts :) I still can't wait for the pictures to get
posted!!!
