There is another facet to consider with the Endurance horse besides whether he is having "fun". Something I have noticed that happens to my horses is that as they become proficient, they develop an air of superiority. They don't HAVE TO GET THE FOOD FIRST OR DIE any more, they tolerate better the insecurities of other horses but they tolerate LESS well bad behaviour by other horses. Just what's happened with mine.
