It's even worse than that to figure out. Of course the research could say
different by now, but I paid to go to a University of Tennessee all day
seminar on perfomance horses at least 10 years ago and they had up a
chart showing which athletic events caused a horse to lean towards acidic
and which went alkaline. Under acidic was everything anaerobic...racing,
barrels, all that stuff. On the other side was Endurance. Seems like the
Standardbred racing was with us (hard to recall) I believe cross country
jumping was with us. So...just buying "performance horse" electrolytes
could be the wrong thing too.

IMO option if you have to feed Maalox or yogurt to sooth the
stomach > > something isn't working -

I always give my electrolytes at the end of the vet check. If he refuses
to eat, I don't give electrolytes (use that more than whether he's
drinking yet to decide). I would probably head out slow, give him a
chance to chill out and eat a little on the trail if he's willing, and
after he starts eating again we might pick up the pace.

. While I agree that P&W is the more palatable of the
brands on the market there is still a salty taste. If possible I
prefer > to put the electrolytes in the food.

What the heck else is *salt* going to taste like? You can taste a
teaspoon of salt in a gallon of soup. If you put 2 TBP of *salt* in 2 TBP
of anything you are going to taste *salt*. I choose my carrier by what
will shoot the farthest back into his mouth! :-) You know if you bypass
your tastebuds you don't have to worry about such. It did seem my horse
started eating even better and I never had any more call to give
probiotics after I started using yogurt as the carrier. I don't know why
it would have that reaction or if any live cultures survive all that salt
or what, just that he seemed to eat better.

- There was a small post in Equus about a
electrolyte > > study saying that electrolytes caused ulcers -

There was a speaker from the ulcer preventative medication (forgot its
name) at our SERA convention. Someone asked him about electrolytes
causing ulcers and even though he'd told us that everything from weaning
foals to hauling across town DID cause ulcers, he kinda blew off the idea
of electrolytes being a problem.

I've know one horse in the SE that did well without electrolytes.

I don't think I've known anyone personally who intentionally went
without, but did have a friend who bought some Perform 'n Win and didn't
read the directions to double up on dosages (lots of non-salt ingredients
taking up room in that scoop). He gave the usual amount and his horse
just didn't come down & cool at two rides. Once he doubled up the horse
went back to normal. That makes me curious about John saying cooling was
a problem in Malaysia. Granted, I guess you'd expect it to be a problem
regardless, but my friend's horse not pulsing down appeared to be a
cooling problem, but was fixed with proper dosage of e-lytes.

I've gone fairly light on electrolytes on our two new guys since they eat
well and we've been taking it easy. Now I'm having to make some decisions
about whether to hit him with the full regimine at Biltmore...what tends
to be a major ride for humidity, heat, exertion, etc. As of now, I may
not give before I start, but I dunno...maybe halfway through the longer
loops and at vet checks. But he's gotta eat for me. Of course, you know
if I really work hard, read all the papers and come up with a very
scientific approach he'll just throw a shoe and get pulled first thing.
:-P
