so as i'm browsing through the LD calendar for 2007 i see that some of
the rides have all their holds away from camp and in fact, provide
detailed directions for the crews. does that mean that a crew is
necessary at such rides?
i've done some ctr's and they ride management always had a truck which
would cart the riders' vet check stuff to the vet check area if it
It may vary by regions some but most rides I have ever been to will transport your stuff to the check. Those with more than one out check normally have multiple locations for you to put your stuff. All I've ever been to try to get it back to camp. That's not to say that something may not be missing - all red buckets look alike.

Some tips from someone that's ridden most of the time crewless - some also say clueless but we won't go there:

a) Mark your stuff - get a water proof marker and put your name in big bold letters on everything you want out there.
b) Put all loose item in a bag of some sort - don't put them in a bucket and expect they won't get "bumped out on a gravel road."
c) Keep it minimal - water and food for you, food for your horse, hay for your horse, etc.
d) Carry what you absolutely cannot afford to be missing when you get there, e.g. electrolytes, candy bar for yourself, extra bottle of water.
e) Don't be ashame to whine ;-) , if your stuff gets lost don't be bashful - people with crews are normally more than happy to share when something happens to your stuff.
f) Don't be afraid to ask someone with a crew to transport your stuff out.

On an LD - even with an out check you should be fine without any stuff going out. Most rides have horse water. You can make it by carrying an extra water bottle for yourself. Some hay would be nice but there is normally enough left over hay on the ground that it is not necessary. If there is grass at the check - it's better than hay any way. All rides I've ever been to has water for horses at checks.

And finally - if the ride doesn't support crewless riders then that is the last time you should support that ride. Voting with your feet is a very good way to get your point across.

Truman
were away from camp. is that done at endurance rides? are there some
rides that absolutely require a crew?

these seem like basic questions but i can't find the answers in any of
the newbie pages.

thanks in advance!
