RE: [RC] Federal Inspection - heidi

This was the practice at the local plant in Redmond, OR as well.  I practiced about 30 miles from there, and often had clients who opted for a short trailer ride to the local plant on "kill day," where the horses were humanely killed within minutes of being unloaded from their own familiar trailers.

The plant was burned, the fire was claimed as arson by the ALF, and it was never reopened.  Sad.  It was certainly a chemical-free and very humane option.

The rendering plant there would also let you bring live horses by and had an employee who would shoot them for you--but it was a less controlled situation, with more margin for error.

"...If this is a practice of
the horse meat industry, do you think it would be lessened if there were
more horse-meat packers in the country?..."

You better believe it.  In the '70's I lived near MPLS, MN.  I had a horse
that needed to be put down.  At that time there was a horse slaughter
operation in the area.  I called them, found what day they were
slaughtering, brought him in, he was weighed, and run up the chute.  His
total time there was a matter of minutes.  The employees were also quite
respectful.

By the time I needed to have a horse put down again, the nearest plant was
in Texas.  There would have been a stressful, cross country trip etc.  Not a
viable option.

Another thing to remember:  Horse owners want their horses treated better
than cows.  Cows are routinely shiped in large trucks and few get upsed.
