If some riders think this, then they are decieved.  The longer your
stirrups, the less secure you are on the horse (that is why jumpers ride
with a shorter stirrup than dressage riders do).

The trade off between short stirrups and longer stirrups comes is the
ability to apply leg aids in order to have communication/control.

The longer your stirrup, the more effective your leg aids (assuming that
you ride well enough to have a balanced seat with that long of a
stirrup); the shorter your stirrup, the more security you have.

However, in my experience, short stirrups also make for sore knees...but
that is because I have arthritis in my knees.
