Re: [RC] Conformation - Truman Prevatt

Bafford said when he retired Silver Charm - I think the last stallion to run as a five year old- that older stallions don't do well. They get too muscle bound and actually lose speed. I don't know if that is true or not - but all the horses that have run much past their 4 yo year have been geldings. Of course Cigar was retired to breed after his first lost - but shot blanks and is now has a paddock next door to John Henry at the KY horse park.

Yep, but he was gelded because he had a nasty termperment. How many of the great stallions were retired young to breed who could have run more? So many variables.

Yes, Frank, I agree the brain is part of the package. We have a local vet
who used to claim he's never done a prepurchase where he couldn't find
something wrong with the horse. Well, he finally found one and gave it a
100% endorsement. That horse turned out to be GRADE 3 lame brain! I
tried him out when they wanted to sell him but he was a huge pain in the
butt...and guess what...when somebody did buy him they were trail riding
him and he bowed a tendon. >g< Meanwhile, same vet told me Kaboot wasn't
really built to handle endurance (didn't like his knees) and he competed
11 years and 3050 miles, 7 100's. His knees were never a problem.

I still don't feel like I'm a great judge of conformation but I could
look at a picture of Brown R Timothy all day. Look at the length of his
forearm compared to his cannons...then compare to Bearcat O'Reilly...two
totally different animals, who if I remember correctely excelled on a
different style course. Timothy was great on an OD type course. Bearcat
excelled on the flat, sandy course. I wish I could have gotten a better
shot of Jayel Super. He just wasn't in the mood to pose that day. He did
roll for me though. :-)
