Re: [RC] re: ROC 1987-musings - Truman Prevatt

The times you see on the OD or the Tevis is actually irrelevant. If the ride is a flat fast ride- it's a flat fast ride. It doesn't mean it is inferior to any other ride. The great horses can win on any trail under any conditions. Rio did it, Cash did it and so did Heraldic when he won Goethe in 2006 in FL.

As far as taking responsibility away from the rides - no one is advocating that to be done. What do you suggest we do with the riders that won't take the responsibility for their horse's welfare - stand back and let them kill their horse? We are either a organization that is responsible for our events and their impact on our equine partners or we are not. If we are not we don't deserve to exist IMO.

You didn't see those kinds of times at the ROC or Tevis or Virginia City or Old Dominion. Now, we want to say that the greatest endurance horses in the world are horses that can survive one or two 8 hour 100 milers. Just a different way of looking at progress. There are still truly great horses being produced in our sport with Heraldic being a prime example. John Crandell was a champion riding under the old rules and is a champion under the newer rules. I see the great riders remaining great and the abusive riders remaining abusive.
