[RC] RC:Serious Question/ Cardiac Pacemaker in Endurance - Nik Isahak Abdullah

Sharon'
As Beverly Kane MD has rightly pointed out the issues are really are really 2 ie
1.If your pacemaker is on demand type to prevent sudden onset slow heart rate while allowing some fast rhytm to carry on eg atrial fibbrillation ,in which case you would probably be on indefinite period of anticoagulant such as warfarin, then this is an absolute contraindication to ride .A fall could end up with life threatening internal haemorrhage .
2.If you are not on anticoagulant ,a fall on the 'right ' location may result in pacemaker malfunction .A relative contraindication .I would play safe and advice my patients to choose other 'soft' sports .
3. For people with heart valve replacement IMO riding is an absolute no no .
