Hi Jennifer,

Your mare's playing is a great first step. Many horses "play" before they drink so that is not a behavior to discourage (as opposed to our kids smashing on their oatmeal till it's all over everything).

If there is any way you can take one long (time wise, NOT mileage wise) trail ride a month, that would be a huge help to her to understand the importance of drinking and eating along the way. My horses have uniformly thought of rides in terms of time, not distance. "If I'm out all day, I need to eat and drink", not "If I go 40 miles, I need to eat and drink".
