Fw: [RC] Kids riding long distances. - Dot Wiggins

Must be a typo in the text at this site. Says they rode from NY to golden Gate in1911, says the book was writen in 1910????

Wonder what they did for money, although in the western parts of the country most folks would feed anyone riding through. Not so many fences or roads, more places to stop and let the horses graze overnite.
Certainly no "child endangerment" rules then.
I think of some of the things my kids were able to do on their own that would get us charged with neglect, or worse, now.
Times do change.

Bud and Temple Abernathy - rode from Coney Island, New York, to Golden Gate Park, California in 1911. They were aged eleven and seven, travelled with no adult supervision, and made the trip in 62 days. Their amazing story can be found in Ride the Wind.


I wonder what society would think of this ride now? Good thing the ride wasn't sanctioned by SERA.
