Here's my opinion, for what it's worth...
1.  I'd bet on abscess that maybe has worked it's way up and out.  Have 
no idea what could be going on with his head.  That's weird
2. I had a horse years ago that I couldn't put weight on.  He was head 
horse in his pasture but not food oriented so he'd walk away once he'd 
taken a bit or two, letting the other horses eat his food.  I did the 
Panacur purge and it did help.  What really helped was bringing him in 
to a stall overnight where he could nibble all night long.  Hard keepers 
can drive ya nuts!
