Before modern medicine etc., almost all Women were wed in their teens. Either because of a lack of technology, or because of religous beliefs, they had as many children as was possible. Scientific American had an article on human reproductive capabilities and claimed that the average Woman had 6 children.

With all of that reproduction, the global human population grew very slowly. The deaths of many more people than would be tolerated now by a careing society was a way of life.

It of course can't be proven, but I suspect that amoung the unnecessary deaths were hundreds of people as smart as Newton, as artistic as Monet, as caring as Ghandi and as inventive as Edison. It is possible that civilization would be much better today if they had lived and reached their potential. There is no reason to throw away human life when reasonable precautions will save it.
