Re: [RC] kids and horses - Jody Rogers-Buttram

No, the boys, dates, whatever DON'T have to take them away.  I grew up in the sport, and it was great for me.  I would rather go to a ride on the weekend than go out with some dumb boy.  In fact, I ditched my date and dress (which my mother still has) for the senior Prom to go to a ride in Mississippi.  Yep, had more fun with that horse and got into a LOT less trouble that weekend.
This is my theory:  If you can keep them involved in the horses for as long as possible, they will miss out on all that bad stuff that they could be into on the weekends.  It worked for me, and I think it will work for Joni.  She had rather be with the horse than anybody.  Look at it this way.....even if they do have some boy/girl they they like and see at rides.....chances are, there will be NO drugs involved and worse case....they find my Wild Turkey.   :))

I KNOW how much trouble horses kept me out of as a teenager, so hope that my little one will be as horse crazy as I am/was.

Me too!! I would not be the person I am today without growing up riding horses. I have twin 14 yr old daughters who are both riding in this sport. We got Top Family in the NW last season and we laughed when we found out because we were just out there having a good time, laughing and riding all year. There is something about riding horses thru the woods that brings out the best conversations with my teenagers. No phones, no interruptions, no t.v. Just the 3 of us and the beautiful scenery on the backs of our horses for hours and hours. Soon dating, driving and jobs will consume them so I'm glad to have this time with them before I am riding alone again.
