[RC] Random thoughts on hard muscles - Maryanne Gabbani

Some of us were sitting and talking about conditioning horses and humans for running and riding and an odd question popped up. When we are conditioning our horses, we actually are alarmed by hard muscles as a symptom of tieing up. Good horse muscles aren't soft and flabby but neither do we expect them to be as hard as say a good tennisplayer's thigh muscle. Or, to use a more personal example, think about patting a marathon runner on the butt as compared with one of our good 100 mile horses.

I guess my question, as a non-runner who doesn't understand the need for hard muscles on humans, is what's different between horses and humans here? A little esoteric, I'm sure but you guys must have some answers about this...
