RE: [RC] being competitive - heidi

I do not see "To Finish is to Win" as being incompatible with riding to
achieve first place, or a particular year end award, or first in a weight
class. It is also compatible with riding for a personal best time, a
horse's best time, or just to finish the toughest ride you personally have
ever attempted.

What it does say to me is that Endurance Riding is not caught up in the idea
"Second place is the first loser". Many people in the good ol' USA seem to
feel, to quote (or possibly misquote) Vince Lombardi, "Winning isn't the
most important thing, it is the only thing."

Right on, Ed.

When Teddy Lancaster and I were working as grunts for the USA team at
the 1998 WEC in Dubai, we coined a phrase that "To finish first, first
you have to finish." And I think that kind of sums it up. The finish
is the first goal--the placing is a secondary priority.
