Re: [RC] I need help :(( - Barbara McCrary

My husband had a herniated disc about 40 years ago. The popular solution then was back surgery, which he refused to have. He toughed it out for about 20 years of occasional spasms. He wore a body cast at one time, I did home traction on other occasions. He felt that trotting endurance style helped strengthen his back muscles, which helped his spine. The final result was that he overcame the problem and has no back pain related to the disc at all now. We're both glad he avoided surgery. His brother had surgery for the same sort of problem and he still has back trouble.

Don't go too crazy. I'm a nuclear medicine technologist and an x-ray tech as well. I've had a fairly large subluxation for a number of years. If the spondylolisthesis is stable, you may be fine, and just have to deal with your pain level, which many times doesn't get better with surgery. You and your doctor need to sit down and talk to figure out what you need to do. Get a second opinion, make sure the radiologist who read your films is good and read up on it. I've seen Dr.'s who like to and do recommend surgery, while others will tell you to stave off surgery as long as you can tolerate the pain. My spondylolithesis is in my neck, but isn't moving, so I just continue to go on-I don't want to have back surgery on my back or neck now, I'm 36 and I have seen a lot really bad outcomes. If it is unstable, then you'll definitely have to look at surgery. Good luck-oh, you probably should have very much manipulation is you have an unstable vertebra, but maybe our resident DO would let you know more about chiro and Spondylolithesis.

I know that we have some chiropractors out here in RC world. So, here's the deal. I have been going to one, he says he can help me. I hope so, but hasn't eased the pain yet...been over a month of 3 times a week. My orthopedic doctor paints a much more bleak picture. One of NO endurance riding. I am only 40, and I told him that was not an option. Of course he also wanted to do a major back surgery with about 6 pins/screws to hold me together. I have spondylolisthesis of L5. Told me that I would crawl back in one day and want that. So, can the chiropractor help me???? Can he keep me from the surgery and still riding???? I go back to him this evening for a re-exam.
Jody- with lower back pain.
