I like sawdust.  Every bit as absorbant as shavings, in my experience, yet it's
much easier to pick through and you get less waste.

We tried the rice hulls.  They were nice for sifting out the poop without
getting a lot of the bedding (hulls).  However, they were practically
non-absorbant.  So the "pee spots" remained as little lakes of pee under the
layer of
rice hulls, rather than the pee being soaked up by shavings.  We've gone back
to
shavings for that reason.  We only stall 2 horses at night, our 31 yr old so
that he has all night to munch on his dinner, and a buddy horse for him.
