Re: [RC] Splints - rides2far

If you look in this month's Endurance News you'll see Josie Whelen &
Southern Rock, 50 mile junior champions at the NC. Rock had a big splint
when he started endurance at 5 ? years old. He did several rides with it,
then after a while started being a bit lame on that leg at times. The
splint was several years old. We got it x-rayed and it turned out there
was a loose piece that was shifting and rubbing the ligament or whatever.
He had surgery when he was 8 maybe? and the vet removed it. I would have
thought it would have been flatter after that but it got *bigger*. He
had to wear a boot over it but it caused no other problems. He did a few
rides here and there, was sold a couple of times as one owner got
divorced, the next went to college, then Josie Whelen got him and he's
tearing up the trails at 17. :-)

I don't know if surgery would help your horse or not, but it seemed to
fix Rock long after the fact.

I bought my current enduro horse from the race track as a 4yo. He is
10 now. He came with a splint on each front that did not seem to
bother him. The left one has stayed the same all these years.
Sometimes the splint on the right leg gets bigger and smaller but
does not bother him when I squeeze it. Sometimes that leg will stock

up after a 50 and once in a great while he will put the right leg
down in such a way that it hurts him for just that step and he gets
off it right away, usually we are walking when it happens. If it is
a
splint that won't heal can it be fixed and if so how? Thanks for any

suggestions.
