Re: [RC] trail riding blind horse - Patricia Israelson

The well known trainer & clinician, John Lyons' partner for 27 years was an appaloosa stallion named Bright Zip.  Zip went blind from a reaction to an antibiotic injection.  For many, many years, John and Zip taught many clinics and went on many trail rides together with Zip trusting John completely for directions.  The trainers were doing a play-day rodeo one evening and one of the events was a keyhole drawn into the arena dirt with white chalk.  Each horse had to run into the keyhole, pivot around and run back out.  Every horse put on the screaming brakes when they spotted the keyhole......except Zip.  He just ran into the keyhole, spun around and ran back out.  Needless to say, John and Zip won the event!
Your friend and her mare will establish a stronger bond than they ever had before as the mare learns more and more to trust her rider.
