They do go bad and it sounds like it is either misreading you battery voltage and not detecting when it is fully charged or not shutting the current off to the battery. One possible problem is there is also a diode in the circuit that connects the battery to the voltage meter in the controller. This meter also measures the voltage from the panel. If the diode is bad then it will allow current to blow back out of that section of the circuit and current will always be getting to the battery. A diode only allows current to flow in one direction unless they are faulty.I went through three controllers some time back. The company got a lot of bad diodes before they figured it out. They kept replacing a faulty unit with another faulty unit. So much for testing before shipping. Truman Ann Blankenship wrote:
