Re: [RC] Eq Herpes Musings - Maryanne Gabbani

From a recommendation from another list where herpes in both horses and humans was being discussed, use L-lysine.

"Yes, that's just the point. I first used it on my horse and then on myself.
It worked unbelievably well on my horse. I always have some now in the barn
in the fridge. In the States you can buy it at the grocery store. I always
have it around. When I show I begin giving it a day or so before and a
couple of days afterward. I give him a lot (2-3 grams per day) and it really
seems to help.
I was amazed. And also about how it helps me. If you have ever had herpes on
your nerves (basically shingles) you know how bad that can be. It is very
painful.
My horse has it in his central nervous system too. It effects the ils joint
and hence the movement in his hindquarters (with most horses you can see it
in the left hind). Can be very bad and is very painful. I am sure that many
horses have it and have never been diagnosed. Approx. 80-90% of all horses
in Europe (and certainly also the same in the states) have the herpes virus
latent in their systems - the virus can have several forms however, so if
you think it might be effecting your horse look it up and ask your vet for a
herpes titer."

Worth a try.

Makes me think about how sometimes our horses have come home from rides with illness, imagine it on this scale. The Paso Fino Nationals in Georgia had a similar problem last year with illness and deaths. And I suspect they don't use communal water troughs. The latency of this is scary, since silent carrier horses can reactivate without clinical signs and spread the virus. I hope there are researchers working on this. One thing it makes me consider is getting nasal swabs done if one of my horses has the snots now to rule out EHV-1 and -4.
