Re: [RC] [RC] Horse size...what gives? - sandra bommert

I wish I understood why everyone seems to think bigger is better.  I've rode mostly hunters, jumpers and dressage and I swear that they're horrible about horse size!  Everyone seems to think that you need to be on at least a 17hh gelding and only weigh around 110lbs.  Well I'm 5'4 and 160lbs and prefer a 15-16hh horse but thats just me; and I also prefer mares to geldings lol.  Right now my ride of choice is a 14.3 closer to 14 nothing hh petite arab mare.  I know of a barn that likes to keep their geldings on a mare hormone supplement and when asked why they did that they replied "to keep them even tempered."  I had to laugh.  Yeah I don't get it either but hey to each his own.  I just look at it this way: it's a lot closer to the ground to get on and it takes less time to hit the ground when I fall off.

Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind!
