Yep, Diane..that is what I did not mention..this "loose" protocol is what I do building up to a 50 which was the question to begin with. After that, I would say I bring the total work load down by about 1/3. Of course at least a week to 10 days totally off after a 50, then work lightly for another week. Then it depends on when the next ride is, but I don't like to do rides closer than 3 weeks apart, preferably 4.

Ranelle's protocol is very good, especially for a horse that is not yet ride-ready. Once you've reached a level of fitness sufficient to go 50 miles in 8 hours or less, you can scale back on the conditioning. Keep the Sunday ride around 20 miles/6 hours and the two weekdays no more than an hour and a half and about 6-8 miles. This means that with a 20 minute warm up and cool down you'll spend some time going 8-12 mph, good practice for your horse AND you.
