Heart rate monitors are great, but you should really get a stethoscope as well.  You need to be able to check your own horse's gut sounds, and check his heart rate when he's not all tacked up with the HRM.  Become familiar with what's normal for your horse in terms of gut sounds, so that you can recognize what's not normal.  There was a recent thread on letter grades from vets on vet cards...as someone noted, some vets simply "grade" on a harder scale, and one vet's C might be a B+ or A- from another vet.  You'll learn who those vets are as you do rides.  In the meantime, if you get a C and are concerned, you can whip out your stethoscope back at the trailer and listen for yourself.
