[RC] 25 or 50? - Spottedracer

I'm fairly new to endurance... Having only done it since '05.. But I started
w/25's then went to 50's...

Even though I consider myself a fairly good judge of what a horse is ready for
(being trained on the race track - then running pro-barrels).. And a very good
one for setting a training regimen to get me & mount where I want to be at a
certain time.... I have and will always ride a 25 for a horse's 'maiden race'.
Even if I've done dozens of 'pre -race' 25's on that horse on a trail used by
AERC.

The stress of competition will affect your horse in unexpected ways. To ask
your stressed maiden horse to do the higher mileage on it's first - is
something that I believe only the experienced/successful riders should attempt.

Especially with it being your maiden ride yourself - you may want to 'scale
back' your expectations and do the lower mileage. Try to 'fall in' behind
highly experienced riders and just listen to them. Get to know the vets - and
ask their opinions on what further training regimens you should do and their
opinion of your horse going to 50's.

Go slowly, keep you and your horse injury free! And good luck!
