RE: [RC] [RC] Being Prepared - Trailering Alone - Mel Cochran

I am a lone wolf too. ;-)

I also use a tent for camping. I have a little REI backpacking tent that is a snap to set up and take down. I will have to see what model it is.

As far as trailering, I can't say that I have done anything special. Your post has me thinking. I do have a metal version of a jiffy jack but I am not sure if the lug wrench for the truck will fit my trailer lugs. I also have some little triangles to sit out in case I have to pull over. I can troubleshoot basic things that could be wrong with the truck but I am really in trouble if anything major goes wrong. Hubby is ordering some of the sensors that could possibly fail and is going to show me how to change them out. The potential of a big truck problem worries me as I don't have roadside assistance or anything like that. I guess I would have to call back home and get someone to come pick up the trailer and horses if the truck broke down. That could be really bad if I was far away!

I always do my best to make sure things are safe before I leave. I check the fluids in the truck, air pressure in all of the tires and make sure that the brake controller is adjusted properly. Once I am on the road I am on my own so I can only hope that I won't have any major problems while out on the highway - and I always keep my cell phone handy!

I used to be afraid to go anywhere by myself with the truck and trailer. My husband finally told me that if I wanted to go do anything with the horses, I would have to go by myself so get over it! It is a good thing that I got some tough love. All it took for me to gain my confidence was getting in a tight spot that I had to back out of without help and then driving through downtown Atlanta. Now, I don't mind going anywhere.

I have to say that I have actually gotten used to going places by myself, even riding by myself. In some ways I actually prefer it and feel just alittle put out if someone wants to ride with me. Imagine that! I might actually have to schedule around someone else. Oh, the horror. ;-)

Mel
