RE: [RC] What do you think when you are coming off? - Christina McCarthy

I took my horse to "Newcomers Day" with the local fox  hunting group this fall so that my young Arabian could gain more experience.  It turned out to be mayhem, horses rearing, kicking not standing still..My horse was pretty good up to the point when a hound came through the corn field and ran by my horse, clipping his hind leg with his tail.  The last thing I remembered is looking to the left and seeing my horses left leg up in the air...the rider behind me said it was if someone had pushed me straight out of the saddle, upward.  My horse had done some sort of bronk move..like a corkscrew.  Luckily for me, I was flung into some bushes that didn't have thorns.  I dusted myself off and remounted.  Had a huge welt on the inside of my right thigh where the stirrup hit.  To add insult to injery, I had to re-state the fall to one on the joint masters' who collect $20 bucks from me.  I gather they made the jackpot that day!

My first thought is: “God, please, let my feet come out of the stirrups.” Once I’m laying on the ground (after doing a bodily inventory), I give thanks that I had to foresight to wear a helmet.

But you know the ol’ adage:
Any dismount you can walk away from is a good dismount.
