[RC] Bucking/what you think when you KNOW you're going DOWN! - Suzanne Boyd

Well, this topic is right up my alley! When I first started riding, I somehow (inexplicably) found myself hooked up with a group of endurance riders. I hadn't been riding for very long, so I had to learn as I went along. (and learn FAST!) Luckily my mount was easily capable. Cantering up and down the Ohio hills with a group of mostly Arab horses(with mostly nuts for riders) I quickly learned(out of necessity) to keep my heels down and my hands low. I remember several(okay, many) times where I was insecure and had to deal with that fear. It was during these times that the same damn thought ran through my mind. Something like,"Dear Lord, please get me out of this sh*t storm and I promise I will take up a new hobby. I swear, help me out this one time and I'll get out of horses and take up a safer hobby, like stamp-collecting." I admitted this occasional fear to a member of our riding group, and it was immediately christened as "Stamp-Collecting Fear" TO THIS DAY, if any of these people find themselves in scary situations, they refer to it as "stamp-collecting fear" Immediately following the stamp-collecting fear, I usually think,(on my way down),"wellllllll, I've *done* it now." As luck would have it, I haven't actually "done it now" as of yet. (but there's always tomorrow!)

And on to your bucking problem....if it was me(and Thank God its not!!)(this time), I would find a long, long hill to ask him to canter up. Not too steep, just a nice steady slope. I always canter green horses for the first time on a gradual uphill slope. They have to work too hard to run off, and it is too hard for them to buck more than a couple times.

JUst my experience,
Suzanne
