Re: [RC] Fast rides~Decade Plus Horses~ - kimfuess

This is a great observation and I would like to add that there are probably several others that are not quite as famous as the ones you mention.  They may not have as many miles as some of the ones mentioned below but they have been "raced" over many seasons and have an incredible record.  Every region has a few of these horses that seem to slip below the National radar.

One of these horses is Robelo Hondo, owned and ridden by Pete Davies.  Hondo started his endurance career in 1988 with a win and BC at the SW 50 mile championship and could still win a BC in 2004 at the Bar H Boogie in the PS region.  Hondo has over 53 starts with 50 completions and 22 Best Conditions.  Almost all of his miles were in the Top Ten and most in the Top 5.  Great horses usually come around once in a lifetime.  But it really takes good horsemanship and a lot of skill to know how often to "race" your horse and still have that same horse winning BC in competitive rides 18 years later.

I also know of a number of horses that have been "raced" between 6 and 10 ride seasons.  I know it is not PC these days to talk about racing and endurance in the same sentence but I think as long as we are awarding a first place it is OK to recognize horses and applaud riders that can ride competitively year after year on the same horse.

Horses can be raced and have long careers.

In addition to Kalil I offer the following observations:

R.O. Grand Sultan -
     -over 10,000 miles,
     -3 World Championship,
-won North American Championship in 1985,
-5th and  Best Condition at the World Championship in 1999
-completed 100 mile ride and tie in his early 20s
R.T. Muffin
-more wins and BCs than any horse in AERC history
     -over 9000 miles
     -won North American in 1991
-came back from serious injury in I believe 1992 to compete for serveral
      more years with junior rider
Ramegwa Drubin
-19 consecutive years of AERC completions and still competing at age 23 in 2006
and gaining almost all A's on vet card.
     -37 AERC 100s with 13 wins - majority of 100s in top3
     -9 100s with 7 wins, 2nd, and 3rd and 5 BCs in 1992

I believe all these horses were trained carefully without too many mile in training.
They were also given good rest after major competitions.
