The fate of things you can no longer see is not trivial. It is the basis of the game of "peek-a-boo"...
Is it no wonder that some horses have anxiety attacks when their buddy disappears? Many, as posts have said, eventually learn this, but some don't.

I like your analogy. One thing though. Even a two year old child knows the difference between his parents vanishing when he covers his eyes and his parents going out for the evening. Ask any babysitter :)
